GED Handbook

This handbook was created to help new and returning Petey Greene tutors be more effective and helpful in the correctional facility classroom. In addition to reviewing the revised GED curriculum (produced in 2014), this handbook also contains tips for tutoring students within the unique correctional environment. This curriculum should also help you address the specific needs of the students with whom you work, including those who struggle with learning differences, may be inadequately prepared for formal education, or lack confidence in their abilities. While this handbook is not exhaustive, it is a good start for those volunteers who wish to become more effective tutors.

This handbook will help you to:

  • Understand the significant revisions to the GED test enacted in 2014
  • Enable you to understand the material your students are studying, even if you are not comfortable with all the content areas
  • Help you adapt tutoring strategies to students with different learning styles or needs
  • Determine which strategies are most effective for pull-out and in-class tutoring sessions, as well as individual and small-group sessions
  • Understand and adapt to the needs of the classroom teachers you are assisting

Although your role as a tutor is extremely important to the students we serve, it’s critical to remember that you are NOT the teacher. Thus, the tutoring techniques discussed in this handbook are not the same as teaching techniques. Before employing any of these strategies, you should discuss them with your classroom teacher and find out what s/he advises. In most cases, the teachers know their students well and can offer advice on how to address students’ unique needs and challenges.
