  • Dr. Heather Ann Thompson: A historian writing on the history, politics and current impact of incarceration and policing in America
  • Johnny Perez, Safety Reentry Advocate, Urban Justice Center, Mental Health Project. Johnny will be speaking with us on issues related to adolescents involved in the criminal justice system and on his own personal experiences at Rikers and in the New York State correctional system.
  • April Hinkle, Fortune Society, Castle Gardens program. April will be speaking with us on how to work with incarcerated adolescents specifically at Rikers since she worked there previously for Fortune Society.
  • Khalil A. Cumberbatch, JustLeadershipUSA Manager of Trainings, lecturer Columbia School of Social Work. Khalil will be speaking on issues concerning immigration as well as his own personal experiences on Rikers and in the New York State correctional system.
  • Five Mualimmak, New York City Jails Action Coalition (“JAC”), Director at Incarcerated Nation Corp. Five will be speaking about solitary confinement and his own personal experiences on being incarcerated at Rikers as well as in the New York State correctional system.
  • Rosalie Cutting, Intern at Fortune Society. Rosalie will be speaking with us regarding education in a correctional setting. Ms. Cutting was incarcerated for over 35 years during which time she completed her GED, and obtained her Associates, Bachelors and Masters Degrees.
  • A representative from Youth Represent a New York City based organization that works exclusively with at-risk and justice involved adolescents and young adults ages 16 to 25.
  • A representative from the New York Legal Aid Society to discuss the legal process from arrest through and including sentencing.
