What is the GED?

According to the GED Testing Service, the producers of the GED exams and credential, “The GED® test credential is the only high school equivalency credential recognized in all 50 states.” Thus, regardless of the region in which you tutor for Petey Greene, you are likely to encounter correctional facilities preparing their students for this exam.

The following four content areas are addressed in the 2014 GED test series:

  • Reasoning through Language Arts (RLA)
  • Mathematical Reasoning
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Each content area has its own distinct curricula and exams, so depending on the classroom in which you are tutoring, you may encounter any or all of these subject areas at some point. You can view the specific testing parameters for each content area at the GED Testing Service website. All tests are delivered via computer, but paper tests are available as an accommodation to students who cannot otherwise access the online version. Each correctional facility will likely face this challenge differently, so it’s best to ask the classroom teacher what method that facility uses.
